Trio con Brio Copenhagen with viola player Tatjana Masurenko

Mozart, Brahms and Kodaly and inspiration from folk music.

Programme

  • Zoltán Kodály, String Trio Intermezzo
  • WA Mozart, Piano Quartet in G minor KV 478
  • Johannes Brahms, Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25

Trio con Brio Copenhagen is a widely recognised piano trio and well-known in the Queen's Hall.

At this evening's concert, the trio will be visited by Tatjana Masurenko, one of the world's leading violists, and will play a programme centered on folk music inspiration in the classical repertoire, but also on Mozart's first piano quartet from 1785, which is considered the first significant work for this ensemble.

Programme inspired by folk music

You can experience, for instance, Johannes Brahms's 1st piano quartet in G minor, which has connections to both Romanian and Hungarian music, which Brahms was strongly inspired by early on. This is expressed at the end of the work, where you hear a Rondo alla Zingarese, which is also called "Gypsy Rondo".

The Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály was also inspired by the Eastern European musical traditions and from 1905 tried to separate the Hungarian folk music from the gypsy connotations of the time. He visited Hungarian villages to collect folk songs and melodies and recorded them on wax cylinders while the villagers sang. Folk melodies played an important role in Kodály's compositions, as, for example, is the case in the intermezzo that is part of the evening's programme.

Tatjana Masurenko

Already at the age of ten in St. Petersburg, the will was strong - Tatjana Masurenko had to convince her teacher that, despite her small hands, she just had to play the viola. And it was a good choice, because today she is among the world's leading viola players. She is passionate about promoting the viola as a solo instrument, and she has therefore had quite a lot of music written for the instrument by current composers.

Trio con Brio Copenhagen

"Con brio" is Italian and means "with energy", and with Copenhagen as their base, the trio has toured the world with their fresh, contemporary approach to the classical repertoire. The trio was formed from the idea of the meeting between two musical couples; the two Korean-born sisters Soo-jin and Soo-Kyung Hong and her husband Jens Elvekjær.

Participants

Tatjana Masurenko: viola

Soo-Kyung Hong: cello

Soo-Jin Hong: violin

Jens Elvekjær: piano
