Steels Unlimited featuring Susan Alcorn and others
Three pedal steels on stage in a beautiful and diverse universe with Susan Alcorn, BJ Cole, Emil de Waal, Gustav Lundgren and more.
The pedal steel is an instrument with a dreamy, "floating" sound, often associated with Hawaiian or country music. But the instrument can do so much more.
This evening you can experience some of this special instrument's best performers, including Susan Alcorn (US) and BJ Cole (GB), in an original program conceived by Gustaf Ljunggren and Emil de Waal. They will be joined by singer Josefine Cronholm, trumpeter Flemming Agerskov and bassist Ida Duelund.
Susan Alcorn, the Baltimore-based pedal steel musician and composer, started out in Texas country & western bands before expanding her horizons to include jazz, world and 20th century compositional music. Her 2020 album "Pedernal" was included in several newspapers' "Best Release of the Year," including the New York Times.
BJ Cole has also pushed the instrument's boundaries and has been part of the British music scene since the 70s, when both Elton John and Joan Armatrading took advantage of BJ Cole's virtuoso playing. Later he has worked with artists such as David Sylvian, Depeche Mode, Beck, Björk, Sting, John Cale, The Verve and Tom Jones.
Gustaf Ljunggren and Emil de Waal have often visited The Black Diamond, including a legendary concert with Kalaha and Bill Laswell in 2019.
For this evening's concert, they are inspired by Gustaf Ljunggren's latest album "Floreana" (to be released 13 May 2022), which features three pedal steels on the track "Bottomless Siestas".
