Robert Schumann (1810-1856): Piano Quintet
*Commissioned by The Black Diamond and Tonhalle Düsseldorf jointly.
The last concert in the series Pianists in the Diamond is with the critically acclaimed Palestinian-Israeli pianist Saleem Ashkar, who, together with the German Henschel Quartet, focuses on Robert Schumann. Especially on the personal and musical dynamics that existed between Robert and his wife, Clara Schumann.
During his lifetime, Robert Schumann wrote several small musical portraits of his contemporaries, and in the same spirit, Ashkar has asked two contemporary composers to write their own Schumann portraits. The Black Diamond is, together with the concert hall Tonhalle Düsseldorf, a co-commissioner of these works, composed by the American Eric Nathan and the Chinese Wang Lu, respectively. Look forward to experiencing the Henschel Quartet and Ashkar's performances of two works by Clara and Robert Schumann as well as two new works that are both inspired by Robert Schumann and have their Danish premiere this evening.

Pianists in the Diamond
Since 2019, The Diamond has had this very well-attended series as a regular part of the programme. The pianists are both names from the top shelf of the classical music scene and very young shooting stars. We have heard music by some of the greatest composers in the history of music, from Beethoven to our own heroes, Gade and Nielsen. This season, the series continues in the same spirit, and this time the piano is paired with a number of established string quartets.
Marianna Shirinyan (DK/AM) and the Danel Quartet (FR/BE) (2:3)
