Pianists in the Diamond: Leif Ove Andsnes (NO) and Christian Tetzlaff (DE)

Two world-class musician friends are now guesting the Diamond together.

Programme

W.A. Mozart (1756-1791): Violin Sonata in A major, K. 526
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): Violin Sonata no. 3 in D minor, Op. 108
Intermission
Donghoon Shin (b. 1983): Winter Sonata (Danish premiere)
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937): Violin Sonata no. 2 in G major, M.77

After more than two decades of collaboration, Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and German violinist Christian Tetzlaff have achieved a deep and instinctive understanding of each other. You can look forward to an extraordinary experience when they visit the Diamond together for the first time.

They are bringing with them Korean composer Donghoon Shin's Winter Sonata. The work was commissioned by Royal Danish Library and Wigmore Hall, London.

The four different violin sonatas in the programme span from the year 1787 to the present day. From a turbulent year in Mozart's life, when his father died, and he composed his famous opera: Don Giovanni. His violin sonata from the same year expresses both heartfelt seriousness and exuberant liveliness. Brahms' dramatic violin sonata from about a century later exudes power and intensity.

After the intermission and Brahms' stormy bow stroke, the Danish premiere of Donghoon Shin's Winter Sonata will be performed. A great love of literature first awakened dreams of becoming a writer in Shin, but it was music that won his heart in the end. He has impressed and inspired with his works, and received several awards for his music, including being the latest recipient of the Claudio Abbado Composer Prize in 2022.

The evening will be rounded off with Ravel's jazz and blues inspired violin sonata, which juxtaposes the piano and the violin as two distinct, separate and in a way incompatible instruments. This evening, however, the two instruments are united - in a masterful ensemble!
