James Brandon Lewis Trio (US)

The comet of the American jazz scene, tenor saxophonist James Brandon, guests The Black Diamond.

Tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis has been a comet on the American jazz scene in recent years - with good reason. His expression is new and fresh, and at the same time he goes hand-in-hand with the inspiration of the great masters such as Coltrane and Rollins.

Critically acclaimed "rising star"

In 2021, James Brandon was named Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist and Top Tenor Saxophonist respectively in the Downbeat International Critics Poll and Jazz Times - and received the critic's award from the Jazz Journalists Association for Album of The Year with the release Jesup Wagon from the same year.

James Brandon Lewis has been called "A saxophonist who embodies and transcends tradition" by the New York Times. Born into and trained in the proud American gospel tradition, this can be heard in his tone and approach, blending the emotional power of gospel with the unpolished groove of blues and traditional R'n'B - inspired by the holy trinity of Albert Ayler, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins.

James Brandon Lewis' live trio features Brooklyn-based electric bassist/producer Josh Werner and his longtime drummer Chad Taylor, who broke through on the free-thinking Chicago scene.

Part of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival

The concert is presented in collaboration with the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, which takes place 5-14 July 2024.
