Friday jazz: Toftemark/Duarte Brazil Trio

The Brazilian bassist Thiago Duarte is a guest at Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2023 and thus the trio Toftemark/Duarte Brazil Trio is formed. It consists of Andreas Toftemark on saxophone, Casper Christensen on guitar and Brazilian Thiago Duarte on bass. You can look forward to the sound of beautiful Bossa nova numbers, samba rhythms and traditional Choro melodies.

Duarte and Toftemark's collaboration began in 2021 when the two musicians met in Berlin and discovered a shared passion for creating new music that fuses Brazilian music and jazz. Since then they have performed together at clubs in Denmark and at the Jazz Festival in Curitiba, Brazil 2023, where they also recorded their first EP with Brazilian musicians. The recording was originally intended as a fun and spontaneous session, but it turned out to be so beautiful that they decided to release it. The result is the five-track EP entitled "Duarte meets Toftemark - Quarteto".

Participants

Thiago Duarte, bass. Known for his efforts in the Brazilian music scene, where he has played with some of the biggest names in Brazilian music, including Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Egberto Gismonti, Joao Donato, João Bosco, Romero Lubambo, Maria Rita and many more. He has also performed at various festivals in Italy, France, Switzerland, Portugal, India, Argentina and the United States. With his extensive experience and expertise, he is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after bass players in southern Brazil.

Andreas Toftemark, saxophone. Andreas' intense and round sound reflects many years of interest in some of the masters of jazz such as Charlie Parker and Barry Harris. Although Andreas' style reflects that of traditional jazz musicians, he has explored many genres and has played everything from traditional jazz to bebop, hardbop, Afro-Cuban, folk and modern jazz.

Casper Christensen, guitar. One of Denmark's promising young talents on the Danish jazz scene, who in 2018 was awarded the "Funen Jazz Talent of the Year". Despite his young age, he has already played with names such as Christina von Bülow, Jan Harbeck, Steen Hansen, Pernille Bevort and others.
