Friday jazz: Dawda Jobarteh Quintet

Come and listen to live jazz by the harbour in front of The Black Diamond - completely free!

For Friday jazz on 21 July on the waterfront, you can experience singer and kora player Dawda Jobarteh in the company of three string players and a percussionist.

In 1999, Dawda Jobarteh moved from Gambia and settled in Denmark. Dawda's legacy is firmly rooted in one of West Africa's most famous music dynasties, but it is as an international musician that Dawda has found his place - and the key to this is his willingness and desire to work with musicians from different backgrounds and traditions. As he also does for this concert. Here he will be in the company of a string trio and the charismatic drummer, Salieu Dibba – a musician who has often worked with Dawda.

Dawda himself sings and plays the kora, a traditional West African harp, but modernises it through effects loops and amplification. Based on his background in West Africa as well as Northern Europe, he manages to create a completely unique sound universe between folk music and Afro-jazz from the two very different musical traditions.
