Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725): Concerto No. 4 in G minor

Bernardo Pasquini: Toccata con lo scherzo del cucco

Alessandro Stradella (1643-1682): Sinfonia in D major

Alessandro Stradella: Sinfonia from “Qual prodigio è ch'io miri?”

Many composers were part of Kristina's academy, including Scarlatti, Corelli, Stradella and Pasquini – all composers whose music to this day stands as some of the most innovative from the Italian Baroque.

The story of the Swedish Queen Kristina (1626-1689) is worthy of a Netflix series - in addition to a prominent place in music history. Her father, King Gustav II Adolf, fell in the Thirty Years' War in 1632, and although Kristina was only six years old, she was already given the title of Queen of Sweden. As regent, she was deeply respected for her political skills and recognised for her wit. But when she was only 28, she abdicated the throne, converted to Catholicism (despite her father being known as "the saviour of the Protestants"), left Sweden and travelled to Italy, where she was received as a heroine and carried on a golden chair through the streets of Rome.

This concert embraces the story of Queen Kristina and her incredibly dramatic life with the fantastic music she inspired the innovative Baroque composers to create.
