Concerto Copenhagen: Haydn's intense Summer Symphonies
With over 100 symphonies, Joseph Haydn stands as one of the greatest composers ever. Concerto Copenhagen reproduces some of Haydn's irresistible symphonies which are both intimate and intimidating.
Programme
Joseph Haydn:
- Symphony no. 47 in G major, “Palindrome”
- Symphony no. 44 in E minor, ”Trauer”'
Intermission
- Symphony no. 43 in E flat major, “Mercury”
We know the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn from the development of the sonata form and as the creator of the classical symphony. He was one of the first composers of the Viennese classics, and he was the 18th century's answer to a global star.
Haydn was associated with the wealthy Eszterházy family and spent many summers in the family's summer residence, Fertöd Castle in Hungary. Here Haydn composed and performed a large number of symphonies. But the space in the summer residence was cramped, and Haydn could only gather 12-14 musicians there. This gave the symphonies both an intimate and intimidating character; magnificent symphonic and intense chamber music at the same time.
