Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) / Karl Aage Rasmussen (1947-): Gli Uccelli (The Birds)
The seasons have always been a great inspiration for composers – especially spring, when nature awakens from winter's slumber. With this concert, Concerto Copenhagen celebrates spring with a programme where the music draws inspiration from the natural sounds of the season.
Baroque music with babbling brooks
In the Baroque, you can also find music that imitates the sounds and moods of spring - from birdsong to the babbling of the brook. Particularly well-known is Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, where the music seeks to recreate the sound of spring. Vivaldi was also inspired by the song of the birds, which he tried to imitate several times, for example in his two concertos for violin and flute, where you can hear the cuckoo, Il Cucu, and the song of the goldfinch, Il Gardinello. All three works are on the programme this evening.
The birds in the sky
In 1927, Italian Ottorino Respighi wrote a suite for orchestra based on music from the Baroque. The suite, called Gli Uccelli (The Birds), tries not only to recall the song of the birds, but also their character. In 2015, the composer Karl Aage Rasmussen rewrote this work for Concerto Copenhagen's baroque ensemble. Can you hear the spring and the birds in the sky, when Concerto Copenhagen ends this spring concert with The Birds by Respighi/Rasmussen?
