Concerto Copenhagen and Hans Christian Lumbye's early music
At this concert, Concerto Copenhagen recreates the early music from the beginning of the 1840s of the legendary Lumbye.
With musicians from both the military and the Royal Danish Opera, Hans Christian Lumbye brought together an orchestra that included instruments and traditions from both worlds.
Hans Christian Lumbye is also known as "Strauss of the North". Born in 1810's Copenhagen, he started his musical career early. First as a trumpeter in the Danish military and violinist in a small entertainment orchestra. In 1839, Lumbye heard a concert with an orchestra from Styria, which played music by, among others, Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauss. Inspired by this concert, Lumbye assembled his own orchestra, which played Lumbye's own compositions - his attempt at the Lanner and Strauss genre. One is tempted to say that the rest is history. Lumbye's orchestra quickly became very popular and was the big attraction at Tivoli's inauguration in 1843. Even to this day, Lumbye's music is part of Tivoli.
