Brooklyn Rider (US)

Three-day mini-festival with string quartets: Classical chamber music with the energy of a young rock band.

The New Yorker quartet Brooklyn Rider has been described as four classical musicians who are surprisingly revitalising and redefining chamber music.

Programme: "4 Elements"

Earth: Osvaldo Golijov - Tenebrae
Air: Henri Dutilleux - “Ainsi la Nuit”
Intermission
Water: Kyle Sanna -Sequence for Minor White
Fire: Colin Jacobsen - Three Miniatures for String Quartet

The quartet has attracted international attention with their new interpretations of 300-year-old string quartets and a repertoire across genres - from Beethoven to American minimalism and completely newly composed works inspired by folk and jazz. Their live performances have a completely unusual musical nerve, they cause a stir and garner rave reviews from all corners of the music world.

The programme is called 4 Elements and draws a parallel to the four classical core elements earth, air, fire and water, a common physical foundation across the ancient cultures. Parallel to this, the string quartet's unique musical ecosystem is a delicate balance between four "elements" that together are able to express the profound beauty of our world as well as its potential for violent change.

Brooklyn Rider dedicates the programme to the four elements as a reflection on the current state of the world and as a musical call to action.
