We focus on the children

At the same time as the schools return from summer holidays, Royal Danish Library opens a new hall for teaching and leisure events for children and young people in The Black Diamond in Copenhagen.

Galejsalen will be the framework for the teaching offers that the library offers on weekdays for primary and lower secondary education. On weekends and during school holidays, Galejsalen will open its doors to children who can participate in creative workshops, games, activities and events inspired by the cultural heritage of the library's collections.

Royal Danish Library is for everyone, and we want to reach more Danes. The library has a special focus on children and young people and families with children with new offers for them to meet the part of the cultural heritage for which the library is responsible. That is why we have invested in a completely new room especially for children's activities and teaching courses, says the library's director Svend Larsen.

The more than 200 square meter room, Galejsalen, is named after the Galejhus, which was part of Christian IV's war harbour. It is the very oldest part of Royal Danish Library's current buildings on Slotsholmen. The hall lay unused for many years.

The first leisure event takes place on 29 August 2020 with our recurring creative workshop, The Creative Library, where children and adults can draw, paint and build their own work of art inspired by the cultural treasures of Royal Danish Library.
