Today, 16 May 2022, marks the opening of the new joint storage facility erected for Royal Danish Library and the National Museum's large cultural heritage collections. The facility will hold 116,000 shelf metres of our material, which will now be secured under far better preservation and safety conditions than the current storage facilities can offer.

“Our collections have been collected during hundreds of years, and they form part of what we call cultural heritage. The word cultural heritage carries serious weight. It may sound silly, but that's not how we feel. Royal Danish Library' preserves cultural heritage because it is a source of knowledge, inspiration, and experience. Every day we notice how history is being used and abused, and that is why cultural heritage, the sources of our history, are so important. The cultural heritage now has optimal conditions in the new storage facility,” explains Royal Danish Library's Chief Executive, director Svend Larsen.

The storage facility makes use of the latest technology in climate management, and there has also been a strong focus on the new facility's energy consumption being as sustainable as possible. This means, among other things, that geothermal heating and cooling is used in the climate-controlled rooms.

Access to unique cultural heritage materials during the move

The move means that you may find that a small part of our collections are inaccessible for a shorter period of time. Of course, we do our best to ensure that the move causes as few inconveniences as possible.

If you need access to unique materials in research reading rooms, please notice that parts of the unique material will be unavailable in the second half of 2022.

If you are planning a research project or a research assignment, you are welcome to contact us, and we will help you find out if the material is available during the period when you need it.
