On a hilltop a little outside Frederikssund, between green fields and newly developed neighbourhoods, is a storage facility. Here the library's cultural heritage collections have found themselves a new home. In the autumn of 2023, phase two of one of the major relocations in the Royal Danish Library's history is carried out when the library's many cultural heritage collections are moved from central Copenhagen to our new shared storage facility in Vinge by Frederikssund.

The collections of unique cultural heritage material are moved to give them the right conservation and protection conditions, so that we take care of the cultural heritage and ensure that it lives on for many future generations. We have also focused heavily on ensuring that the energy consumption of the new facility is as sustainable as possible, including by using geothermal heating and cooling in the climate-controlled warehouses.

The move means that you may experience that parts of our collections are unavailable between 18 August, 2023 and 1 January, 2024. We will of course do our best to ensure that the move causes as little inconvenience as possible. When we have finished, users will be able to order the materials for our reading rooms as usual.

Specifically, the move will include materials from the following collections:

  • The manuscript collection
  • The folklore archive
  • The map collection
  • The collection of prints and photographs
  • The music collection
  • The theatre collection
  • Oriental and Judaic collection
  • Small Print New Collection (1990-2022) (closed from 1.1.2023)
  • Danish Collections (17th-century publications and various special collections)

Use of unique heritage materials during the move

If you are planning a research project or a research assignment, you are welcome to contact us now. Then we will help you find out, if the material is available during the period you need it.
