Singspiel in Three Acts

NWGW 148
DF 170

Author: Carl Borgaard after Eugen Scribe

Composition: Copenhagen Autumn 1848 to October 1849.

Gade started working on "Mariotta" in the autumn of 1848 having returned from Leipzig. In a letter to Conrad Schleinitz dated 29 October 1849 he wrote: "Das Stück spielt in Italien, ich musste also aus meine nordische Nebel heraus, und es hat mich wohlgethan in vielen Hinsicht." (The piece is set in Italy which meant that I had to get out of my Nordic mist which has done me good in many ways). The Singspiel only had nine performances and was never revived. It remained Gade's only opera. Mariotta's Romance from Act One, however, became very popular.

Roles: Alfonso, Prins af Parma (T.tenore (tenor) ); Pasquale Tromboso, Livlæge og Minister (B.basso (bass) ); Bianca, hans Gemalinde (S.soprano ); Carlo, Maler (T.tenore (tenor) ); Mariotta, hans Brud (A.alto ); Giobbino, Dørvogter hos en Eremit (B.basso (bass) )
