GW I:9

Composition: 1840-1841.

In March 1840 Musikforeningen, which had been established in 1836 with the purpose of raising the awareness of Danish music, set up a competition for the best full-sized overture for orchestra. The works were to be submitted anonymously; the judges were Mendelssohn, Louis Spohr and Friedrich Schneider and the deadline was 31 October. At first Gade did not intend to submit an overture for the competition, but he was persuaded by the leader of The Royal Danish Orchestra, J.F. Frøhlich. In November 1840 - that is after the deadline - he added the overture in his so-called "composer's diary". This together with the fact that for months Musikforeningen had done nothing at all after having received the scores, even though they in their instructions to the judges noted that they would receive all the works in one lot as soon as the deadline expired, reveals that Musikforeningen simply was waiting for additional contributions, which they also received. In late November they got one from Gade's friend Carl Helsted, and between 16 and 22 January 1841 they received Gade's "Echoes of Ossian" which was allocated the number "10". With this work Gade won the competition. On 19 November 1841 it had its first performance in Copenhagen, on 18 January 1842 it was played in Euterpe in Leipzig, and on 27 January in Gewandhaus conducted by the leader of the Gewandhausorchester, Ferdinand David. This was the beginning of Gade's international career.
