Chr. K.F. Molbech was not only a playwright but also censor at The Royal Theatre, which caused a lot of complications, delaying the first performance considerably. The critics praised the actors and Hartmann's music, and a veritable "Ambrosius Fever" spread over the country. Between May 1877 and May 1885 it was performed seventy-three times.
