"Undine" is based on the German author Friedrich La Motte Fouqué's famous tale of 1811 with the same title, which also inspired Hans Christian Andersen to his world famous fairy tale "Den lille Havfrue" (The Little Mermaid) (1837) and E.T.A. Hofmann to his opera "Undine" (1816). C.E.F. Weyse was asked to write the music but declined very straigthforwardly, recommending the young H.S. Løvenskiold instead. Why Hartmann ended up as the composer is unknown. Parts of the music became very popular as concert pieces.

In half binding; brown leather on spine and corners and marbled sides. On the spine in gold, the monogram of King Frederik IX and "I.P.E / HARTMANN / UNDINE PART." On first music page stamped "DET KONGELIGE THEATERS EIENDOM". Paper: 16 staves (Introduction); 12 staves (pp. 39-58); 18 staves (pp. 59-130); 16 staves (pp. 131-136): 20 staves (pp. 137-140); 16 staves (pp. 141-170); 20 staves (pp. 171-202). Many different paginations at top of the pages partly in Hartmann's hand. At the bottom paginated 1-202 (pp. 137-138 and 139-140 bound in opposite order; p. 175 twice). Last page blank. At the end of the Introduction on p. 38 signed and dated: "I:P:E: Hartmann / 14/9 42". Tempo markings and spoken text has been repeated in a foreign, much larger hand. As it is written in Kurrent script it might have been added by the conductor of the performances at The Royal Theatre, Franz Glæser. On p. 136 Glæser has added some remarks concerning Act Four in German. On p. 138 "Til 4^dieAct af Undine, foran N^o 9". Page 142 and p. 150 have been crossed out in red crayon. At the end of No. 11 on p. 202, signed and dated: "I:P:E: Hartmann / Op: 36. / d: 6/9 42."
