Musik til Carl Borgaards melodramatiske eventyr "Undine"

Music for Carl Borgaard's Melodramtic Fairy Tale "Undine"

Opus 33
HartW 16
DF 196

Author: Carl Borgaard

Composition: 1842.

"Undine" is based on the German author Friedrich La Motte Fouqué's famous tale of 1811 with the same title, which also inspired Hans Christian Andersen to his world famous fairy tale "Den lille Havfrue" (The Little Mermaid) (1837) and E.T.A. Hofmann to his opera "Undine" (1816). C.E.F. Weyse was asked to write the music but declined very straigthforwardly, recommending the young H.S. Løvenskiold instead. Why Hartmann ended up as the composer is unknown. Parts of the music became very popular as concert pieces.
