Corsarerne

Opera i tre Acter

The Corsairs

Opera in Three Acts

Opus 16
HartW 2
DF 190

Author: Henrik Hertz

Composition: 1832 to 1835.

Already less than a month after the premiere of "Ravnen" (HartW 1) in October 1832, Hartmann started planning a new opera together with the poet Henrik Hertz, and in the middle of January 1833 they had a meeting with the director of The Royal Theatre. A few days later Hartmann received the text for the first scenes of "Corsarerne", the rest of act one followed a month later, and on Hartmann's birthday on 14 May Hertz finished his text. Hartmann end-dated his score 12 March 1835, and the premiere took place on 23 April. In 1883 Hartmann revised his music on the basis of a new version of Hertz's text which had been published in 1860, but this version was never performed. During his visit to Paris in 1839 Hartmann showed the score to Rossini, who was very positive but pointed out that there were too many different motifs.
