In the summer of 1866, the teacher Ernst Trier asked Hartmann, if he would consider composing tunes for a selection of texts, which Trier found suitable for use in the Danish folk high school. Hartmann sent him five different tunes, among them "Aftensukket, Nattegraaden", which became extremely popular with the pupils.
