In his later years Hartmann received many poems from more or less well known poets who hoped that he would set music to them. One of those poets was the vicar Vilhelm Gregersen, who contacted Hartmann in 1887. Hartmann composed tunes to several of his poems until Gregersen realized that he himself was an able composer.
