Composition: 1855-1856.

The poet Christian Winther published his verse epos "Hjortens Flugt" in november 1855, the main figure, Folmer Spillemand, allegedly being a self portrait of the author. The work rapidly became a success, and shortly afterwards Hartmann made a selection of the verse epos to which he composed music.
