Composition: Between 1839 and 1842.

It is not known exactly when these songs were composed. The six of the seven songs in the autograph score are undated, but "Winterabend" (HartW 333), which was left out in the printed edition, is dated "24/10 1839". The collection is dedicated to Studenter-Sangforeningen which was founded in July 1839 and of which Hartmann became a member in 1840. They performed Nos. 2 and 4 at a concert in December 1841 and No. 5 in May 1842 - a month before the collection was published.
