This is Hartmann's first collection of songs to German texts, published in Leipzig. Apart from "Heidenröslein", which was composed in 1829, the songs according to Hans Christian Andersen were composed in 1837 as a result of Hartmann's visit to Germany the previous year, where the well known music publisher Friedrich Kistner had promised to publish some of his works.
