The official cantatas in connection with the death of King Frederik VI on 3 December 1839 were composed by C.E.F. Weyse; however when Studenterforeningen decided to hold an memorial feast on the birthday of the late king on 28 January 1840, they asked two of their own members to write text and music: Hans Christian Andersen and Hartmann. The cantata was published in April 1840, but the romance "Den danske Bonde bad" (No. 4) was already so popular that it was printed separately in January 1840.

In leather half binding with marbled sides. Handwritten label pasted on front cover inscribed: "Cantate / til Studenterforeningens Sørgefest / over Kong Frederik den Sjette / af / I:P:E: Hartmann / op: 27. / Partitur." On inside of the cover Hartmann has written: "Opført 1ste Gang ved Studenterforeningens Sørgefest - 28 Jan: 1840. 2den Gang ved Concerten for Frederik VI Asyl i Slotskirken - 2 Febr.; 3die Gang ved Concerten for Oprettelsen af et Monument for Frederik VI i Frue Kirke 3 Decbr. - ". Written in brown ink. Paper: 18 staves. Paginated 1-31 on every other page in upper right-hand corner by Hartmann; from No. 6 paginated 25-33 followed by 15 unpaginated pages. Later paginated 1-60 in foreign hand at the bottom of the pages. Above the music on p. 1: "Sørgesang Cantate over Konge Frederik den Sjette. I:P:E: Hartmann." At the end of the music on p. 55 end-dated and signed "d: 28 Jan: 1840 / I:P:E: Hartmann / Op: 27". Page 56 blank. Above the music on p. 57 in Hartmann's hand: "Forstærkende Instrumentation til Studenterforeningens Sørgecantate". This concerns Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9, where fl.2, cl.2 and 3 trb. have been added. At the bottom of p. 60 signed "I:P:E: Hartmann / op: 27."
