Nielsen's Nærmere Gud til dig was originally composed for a benefit concert after the loss of Titanic on 14 April 1912. He drafted a short score in pencil with a few indications on the instrumentation which he then left to Julius Reesen to complete. The score was finished on 18 May. The concert was cancelled, however, and the music was not performed until three years later.
